Saints joining Roaf at Hall of Fame

Willie Roaf is going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August and the New Orleans Saints are joining him.

The Saints reportedly will open their preseason Aug. 5 by playing in the annual Hall of Fame Game. Their opponent hasn’t been determined yet, but the Saints volunteered for the Hall of Fame Game because it coincides with Roaf’s induction.

This means the Saints will play five preseason games this year instead of the traditional four. In the past, teams that appear in the Hall of Fame Game have been allowed to open training camps before other teams.

Roaf will become only the second player to spend the majority of his career with the Saints to go into the Hall of Fame. Linebacker Rickey Jackson was the first.

Why Miami is best for Peyton Manning

On the field and off, Peyton Manning seems like a good fit for the Miami Dolphins.
AP Photo/Alan Diaz
MIAMI - Memo to Peyton Manning: If things don't work out in Indianapolis over the next several weeks -- and they probably won't -- it's time to take your talents to South Beach.

Yes, Manning should be the next superstar player to land in Miami. The Colts are expected to release Manning before his $28 million bonus is due in March. Indianapolis holds the No. 1 overall pick, which will kick off the Andrew Luck era while simultaneously ending the Manning era.

It's time for Manning, if he's healthy, to make another team a Super Bowl contender. The Dolphins can't make their pitch while Manning is still under contract. But there is nothing illegal about the AFC East blog doing some early legwork and making a pitch for the Dolphins instead.

NCAA Lets Facebook Fans Pick March Madness Field

It’s an annual rite for college basketball fans to grumble about how they would have done a better job than the NCAA’s official selection committee when picking the March Madness tournament field.

This year, a team of ten Facebook-savvy fans gets a chance to prove what they know, and demystify the selection process for others, thanks to a first-of-its-kind NCAA contest.

Announced today, the Super 10 contest winners will travel to Atlanta for Selection Sunday to make their picks using official data while using social media to document their experience.

The winners were chosen after submitting 30-second videos demonstrating their passion and basketball knowledge to the NCAA’s March Madness Facebook Page. In Atlanta, they’ll attend the ACC conference tournament, tour the Turner Sports broadcast studios where March Madness coverage will take place, and be given an in-depth primer on how teams are selected for the field.

Then they’ll adjourn to a war room with some former members of the official committee and create their own bracket to be posted to Facebook and NCAA.com an hour before the actual version is released on March 11.

“One push this year is to make the process more transparent,” Jeff Hathaway, chair of the NCAA’s selection committee, told Mashable. “We’ve done these mock selections for members of the media, college coaches and broadcast talent, but now to give these 10 fans an opportunity will be a tremendous experience for them and a great opportunity to shed some light on how it actually works.”

Eagles close to signing Trent Edwards

It’s rare for a G.M. give much away on the podium at the Scouting Combine, but Eagles G.M. Howie Roseman made an exception Thursday.

Roseman strongly indicated that the team will sign quarterback Trent Edwards shortly.

Of course, Roseman could be open about it because Edwards isn’t exactly in high demand. He did not finish last season with a team.

The other big takeaway from Roseman’s session: He was more optimistic than ever about DeSean Jackson’s future in Philly.

“We’re excited about the future of DeSean Jackson in Philadelphia,” Roseman said.

NFL COMBINE: Falcons interview Coby Fleener

INDIANAPOLIS – Former Stanford tight end Coby Fleener, who ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay considers the top tight end in the draft, had an interview with the Falcons at a downtown hotel Wednesday night.

“I talked to the Falcons tight end coach [Chris Scelfo] last night,” Fleener told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday. “He seems like a good coach and a nice guy.”

The Falcons have the 55th overall pick in the second round of the NFL draft, which is set for April 26-28. Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez signed a one-year extension late last season and is expected to retire after the 2012 season.

Special day for special dragon

2012 isn’t just the Year of the Dragon. It’s the Chinese Year of the Yang Water Dragon and from a Feng Shui standpoint, the calendar will unravel lots of possibilities for good fortune.

The Year of the Yang Water Dragon comes only once in 60 years. The last time it fell was in 1952 and the next time will be in 2072. What makes the Water Dragon special is its relation to the single driving influence of the three other elements of nature – earth, wind and fire. The importance of water is reflected in the fact that it covers 2/3 of Planet Earth and 95 percent of the human body – we can’t live without it. As for the Water Dragon, it is widely characterized by thunder, lightning, growth, creativity, ability to transform, patience, perceptive thought process and insightful decision-making.

It isn’t accidental that today marks the 60th birthday of a man known for all those characteristics of a Water Dragon. As if fate dictated it, Ricky Vargas is president and CEO of Maynilad Water Services which caters to the 17 cities and municipalities of the West Zone of Greater Metro Manila. Vargas is also ABAP, SBP vice chairman and Talk ‘N’ Text governor in the PBA. For his accomplishments in sports, he is being cited as Executive of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association at the Annual Awards Night in the Manila Hotel on March 3.

Patrick Gregorio, who works closely with Vargas as Maynilad senior vice president, ABAP secretary general and Talk ‘N’ Text alternate governor in the PBA, said the man is a cut above the rest. “He is the epitome of the Water Dragon,” said Gregorio. “He’s strong in transformation and human relations. He’s a hands-on executive. He employs a collegial approach to management decision-making. He listens to suggestions. He’s very thorough in evaluating situations before making a decision. He has an abundance of good public relations, charisma and IQ. He reads a lot and is well-versed on significant issues that make a difference in our lives.”

Vargas’ sports lineage goes back to his grandfather Jorge Vargas, the founding member of the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation which is now the Philippine Olympic Committee. Jorge Vargas became the PAAF president in 1936 and earned the distinction as the first Filipino member of the International Olympic Committee. Vargas’ love for sports is a consuming passion and it shows in the way he has successfully carried out the mission of excellence set by PLDT chairman, ABAP chairman, SBP president and Talk ‘N’ Text team owner Manny V. Pangilinan.

“Not too many know that when Talk ‘N’ Text went down 1-3 in the best-of-seven semifinals against Petron in the last PBA conference, Mr. Vargas took it upon himself to do his share in getting the team back on its feet,” confided Gregorio. “He postponed an executive meeting to drop by the Moro Lorenzo Gym where the team was practicing. He spoke with Jimmy (Alapag) one-on-one. He talked to all the players. If he didn’t have the heart for sports, he wouldn’t have gone out of his way to motivate the team. We all know what happened in the end.”

Vargas attended Ateneo high school and finished with a psychology degree at UST. He was a highly-regarded human resource executive at Citibank when Pangilinan brought him to PLDT as senior vice president.

“Mr. Vargas comes across as a very down-to-earth guy,” said Gregorio. “What grounds him is his association with close friends going back to his UST and Citibank days. He never loses touch with reality. His UST buddies include Eboy Jovida and Paul Laud, both musicians. His Cititbank colleagues include Renee Rubio (now Securities Clearing Corp. COO), Manila Water CEO Gerry Ablaza and Eton CEO Danny Ignacio. He believes in the culture of sharing, of managing people like a family. That’s how he transformed Talk ‘N’ Text into a champion team, how he transformed our Filipino amateur boxers into medalists. He lives a simple life with simple joys. It’s no wonder that he’s one of Boss MVP’s most trusted guys.”

At ABAP, Vargas laid out the way for Mark Anthony Barriga to qualify for the London Olympics, for Eumir Marcial to strike gold at the World Junior Championships, for Rey Saludar to reach the top at the Asian Games and for four fighters to hit paydirt at the recent Southeast Asian Games.

“Mr. Vargas realizes that if we expect our athletes to go the extra mile for the gold, we should at least take care of their families,” said Gregorio. “So he addressed all possible distractions and provided for incentives to motivate our athletes. Our Southeast Asian Games gold medalists, for instance, received P300,000 each and our Olympic qualifier, P150,000. Before his involvement in ABAP, Mr. Vargas had no background in boxing. But his experience as a people person and an executive was more than enough to touch the heart and soul of our athletes.”

Gregorio said Vargas’ professionalism is exceptional. “At ABAP, Mr. Vargas doesn’t take PLDT’s support for granted,” continued Gregorio. “Mr. Vargas makes a presentation to convince PLDT that there is marketing value in supporting the ABAP. He picked a professional, Ed Picson, to manage ABAP’s day-to-day operations and put his stamp of approval on a four-year program. You will notice how active the ABAP is in staging regional and national competitions, how motivated are our fighters to battle for our country and their families.” When Vargas served as PBA chairman, the pro league similarly enjoyed a renaissance. “Management systems were instituted,” said Gregorio. “Mr. Vargas made it a point to professionalize the conduct and decision-making of the Board. He left a significant imprint that today, stands as a hallmark in the PBA.”

Gregorio said one of Vargas’ earliest dreams was to become a doctor. “He has realized that dream through his son Dino who is now a doctor,” said Gregorio. “He’s happily married to Gloria de Castro of Bulacan and they’re blessed with three children, Dino, Nico and Katrina, and three grandchildren.”

As Maynilad CEO, Vargas is spearheading the launch of the Philippine Popular Music Festival at the PICC Plenary Hall on July 14 with Ryan Cayabyab as executive director. Vargas, the organizing committee chairman, said “It’s high time we celebrate the artistry of the Filipino songwriter … what better way to do that than by giving them an avenue to showcase home grown talent and shine on a stage of their own.” The precursor Metro Pop Song Festival was held from 1977 to 1985 and from 1996 to 2003 but not until now has a similar concept been revived.

“The launch of the Philippine Popular Music Festival will be on Boss MVP’s birthday,” said Gregorio with a smile. “So you see, Mr. Vargas thinks of everything.”

Salud mulls more games, possibly playoff, in Dubai

DUBAI – PBA commissioner Chito Salud said it’s not a remote possibility the league will bring even bigger games to Dubai in the future, possibly a quarterfinals series or a finals game following the receptiveness of Filipino workers and expats here.

Salud was delighted by the warm welcome that he gamely revealed his future plan for the Dubai OFWs during the press conference at Asiana Hotel a few hours after their arrival from Manila Wednesday.

“Please note that we’re already holding official PBA games here, not exhibition matches. To show more love and affection to our kababayans here, at the right time, we may bring playoff matches,” said Salud.

Dubai-based Filipino journalists said OFWs here are even more supportive of the PBA now, following its bad experience with the promoter of its Dubai visit last year.

Salud stressed, though, that the PBA is moving forward even as promoter Ramon Pizarras is now in the central jail here, serving a sentence for a separate case.

“We even tried to arrange a jail visit. But apparently, they have a short visiting time here. We can’t be accommodated,” said Salud. “We want to see him. He’s still a Filipino after all.”

The PBA played two games before a full-house crowd at the Al-Shabab Sports Club last year yet Pizarras didn’t fulfill all his obligations, owing the pro league P1.5 million.

Nonetheless, Salud maintained the PBA will not turn its back on OFWs here.

“At the right time and talking to the right people, our long-term goal here is to hold playoff games. I think it’s possible to hold one best-of-three quarterfinals series here while another series is being played back in Manila. Or we can play one final game here,” said Salud.

The PBA is now working with the group of San Fernando, Pampanga native Edwin Daeng for the two-game series featuring Rain or Shine, Barangay Ginebra and Barako Bull.

The Elasto Painters and the Energy were to square off at 8 p.m. Thursday (12 midnight in Manila) to kick off the series.

Next up is the Rain or Shine-Barangay Ginebra tiff at 7 p.m. Friday.

For the three teams, a visit to Burj Khalifa or any Dubai desert camp can wait some other time as they’re focused on their face-offs they consider virtual knockout games.

Going to Thursday’s game, both Rain or Shine and Barako Bull are down in the leader board coming off a poor start in the short mid-season tourney.

“It’s already desperation period for us,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao. “The elims is so short and four teams will be eliminated. You need at least five wins to make the playoffs.”

“This Dubai trip is important for us. We’re down to six steps to the playoffs. One misstep and we’re in trouble,” said Barako Bull coach Junel Baculi.

 in Oklahoma City. AP
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Thunder made it 11 straight home wins with a 119-104 win over the Boston Celtics on Thursday, extending its lead in the NBA Western Conference to three games.

Russell Westbrook scored 31 points and Kevin Durant added 28 for Oklahoma City, which led by as many as 27 points before Boston hit back to get within six with 3:31 left. Durant banked in a pair of jump shots and hit two free throws during an 11-2 run that sealed it.

Kevin Garnett’s return after a two-game absence wasn’t enough to lift the Celtics, who were still without point guard Rajon Rondo as he served the second of a two-game suspension.

Paul Pierce and Garnett scored 23 points apiece, and Garnett also had 13 rebounds.

In Chicago, the hosts beat Milwaukee for the seventh straight time, 110-91.

Carlos Boozer scored 20 points, while Joakim Noah had 13 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for the first triple-double by a Chicago center since Artis Gilmore in 1977.

The Central Division leaders built an 11-point halftime lead and broke it open in the third quarter, a nice send-off for the All-Star break.

Brandon Jennings scored 20 points to lead the Bucks.

Tibayan caps N Ecija reign in CLRAA boxing

A Bataan spiker (right) gets a point at the net against
San Jose del Monte in yesterday’s volleyball hostilities
in the Central Luzon Athletic Associaton in Iba, Zambales.
 Bataan won the match.
IBA, Zambales, Philippines  – Palarong Pambansa bronze medalist Ariel Tibayan scored a sensational first-round technical knockout win over Jonathan Aguas of Tarlac City to power Nueva Ecija to the overall title in secondary boxing of the 2012 Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association (CLRAA) at the Peoples Park here on Thursday.

Bets from Angeles City, meanwhile, scooped six gold medals on the final day of swimming competitions at the Zambales Sports Complex to emerge as the best swimming delegation in terms of gold medals harvested.

After a dominating show in gymnastics, CLRAA defending champion Bulacan flexed its might in elementary taekwondo in nearby Botolan town with five gold medals.

The 15-year-old Tibayan bloodied the nose of Aguas with a solid right straight, forcing the Tarlac bet to quit in the pinweight division.

“I am stronger now because of my rigorous training,” said Tibayan, who ruled the division for the third straight year.

A junior at the Nueva Ecija National High School, Tibayan now trains his sights on the Palarong Pambansa in Pangasinan where he hopes to improve on his third place finish last year.

Regelio Astudillo (light mosquito), Glerence Cuyapen (mosquito) and Verael Angelo dela Cruz (light flyweight) also bagged gold medals as Nueva Ecija extended its reign in secondary boxing to seven years.

Cebu takes PAL Interclub by storm

DAVAO, Philippines  – Cebu Country Club stormed ahead with a solid 134 as Del Monte blinked in their second day shootout and the youthful Alabang squad broke down when things got tough at the Apo layout, racing to a 10-point lead over the defending champion halfway through the PAL Men’s Interclub here yesterday.

Out to accomplish what they had failed to achieve last year when they were routed by the Bukidnon-based golfers by 18 points in Cagayan de Oro, the Cebuanos banked on the solid games of Lloyd Go (36) and Gen Nagai (35) then drew a steady outing from Gio Gandionco (33), Mark Dy (30) and Eric Deen (30) to threaten to turn the 65th staging of the country’s biggest amateur golf team championship into a one-team show.

With a 257 aggregate, counting its scrambling 123 at Rancho Palos Verdes in Wednesday’s opener, Cebu Country Club posted a big cushion over a fancied Del Monte side (124-247) heading to the last 36 holes of the five-to-play, four-to-count tournament.

But no lead is safe in the Interclub, especially on these two demanding courses with Canlubang overhauling a 12-point deficit in the final round at Apo to beat Luisita and capture the seniors crown last week.

“I was disappointed yesterday (Wednesday) but today (yesterday) I am ecstatic. We more than made up for our first round mistakes,” said CCC chairman Montito Garcia, who suits up for the team today as action shifts back to the rolling Rancho Palos Verdes.

Del Monte, bannered by two of the country’s top players, hobbled all day with only Clyde Mondilla, the former national champion, able to churn out an even par card worth 36 points. Noel Langamin and Mel Cubillo struggled with a pair of 31s and Magno Arancon Jr. putting in a 26 for that 124 and a 247. Mark Mondilla’s 24 didn’t count.

Alabang Country Club failed to rekindle the fire that fueled its surprising surge of 124 in the first round as it literally groped for form and found itself tumbling down the leaderboard with a measly 104 output for a 228, 29 points adrift.

Manila Southwoods, a two-time Interclub champion, made a 109 but stood far behind at 212.

“Bad luck but we will try to play good tomorrow (today),” said Alabang skipper Arnel Paras.

The 16-year-old Go, toughened up by a series of local and international appearances, including a stint with the national team in last year’s Putra Cup, turned in an impressive 36-point performance in winter rules, equivalent to even par in stroke play, as he took charge for the club chasing a first-ever Interclub championship.

Nagai, a 15-year-old Japanese, bettered his 34-point output at Palos Verdes with a 35, closing out his stint with the club hoping to bring the coveted crown to its home when it hosts the event’s 66th staging next year.

Gandionco anchored the team’s impressive second round charge with a 33 while any of the 30s by Dy or Deen counted for the team’s output at the hazard-laden layout.

Montito Garcia joins the four other players who saw action in the first round at Palos Verdes, including Carl Almario, Bayani Garcia, Joven Neri and Mark Sarmiento as they try to increase their lead in a bid to cushion the impact of Del Monte’s expected fightback.

Whatever, the Cebuanos will have one night to relish their superb effort that sparked hopes for what could be a big breakthrough for a team which was elevated back to the premier category last year after winning seven titles in its nine-year stint in the Founders Division. CCC saw action in the Championship Division in 1999 in Davao before it was re-classified to the Founders class the following year.

Jama Reyes, who sat out the first day, carded 30 points to emerge Alabang’s top scorer as Santiago Lorenzo and Miguel Shah, who turned in impressive rounds of 33 and 32, respectively, at Palos Verdes, sputtered and settled for a pair of 26s while Dax Garcia and Paras scored 22 points each, one of which counted for the youthful squad.

Wack Wack shot a 116 behind a pair of 31s by EJ Marcelo and Matthew Manotoc, a second 28 by Elphege Wong and a 26 by Garry Uy as it broke away from a tie with Orchard to gain a four-point lead over host Apo Golf and Riviera with a 36-hole haul of 233.

Apo, which had a so-so 101 in the first round, assembled a 122 for a 229 in a tie with Riviera, which had a 121.

Orchard, which shared the lead with Wack Wack Wednesday, dropped to fourth with a 111 for a 228 after being slapped a team penalty of two points after Byron Cho holed out for a double-bogey instead of a pick-up.

In Friendship class, Fil-Hawaii pooled a 72 for a 152 as it pulled away by 14 points over UP Tee Jots, which had a 60-138 while PGA British Columbia stood a point farther back at 137 after a 65.

The Platinum sponsors of the 65th PAL Interclub are Mareco Broadcasting Network, Radio High, Stargate Media, Media Five and GE while the major backers are Asia Brewery, Business Mirror and Airbus.

Other backers: Department of Tourism, Philippine Graphics, Boeing International Corp., Bombo Radyo, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Bulletin, Moevenpick Resort and Spa Cebu, Plantation Bay, Radisson Blu Hotel and Imperial Palace Waterpark and Spa Cebu.

Pogba set to start, Rooney out

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson could be set to hand 18-year-old midfielder Paul Pogba his European debut for the club on Thursday against Ajax in the Europa League.

Pogba has been stalling over a new contract amid reports of interest from Manchester City and Arsenal, but Ferguson revealed that veteran defender Rio Ferdinand has stepped in to persuade the French youngster that his future lies at Old Trafford.

"Rio has become an important figure at the club. He is good with the young players," Ferguson said. "At the moment, he's working hard on the boy Pogba and talking to him. The young boy is unsure, but Rio is well regarded by him."

Pogba has been on the bench for United's last five games and could be thrust into action with United leading 2-0 from the first-leg.

''It is possible we could give Pogba a run-out,'' said Ferguson. ''It depends because there are a lot of players who need a game; Nani, Young, Hernandez, Cleverley, Smalling, Jones. Those players will all play tomorrow and we hope to put a sprinkling of experience amongst it.''

However, Wayne Rooney will miss the game after the striker was the only significant absentee from the open portion of training due to a throat infection.

"Rooney's out for tomorrow," said Ferguson. "He has a bad throat. There were traces of it in Amsterdam last Thursday. He has been in bed over the weekend and came in today for the first time and we are trying hard to get him right for Sunday.''

Michael Owen, though, has taken steps on the road to a first-team return by taking part in the session.

Owen has not featured for United since picking up a thigh injury in a Champions League group phase match against Otelul Galati in November, but trained alone at Carrington on Wednesday.

The forward has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, but he appears to still have the resolve to get back to the highest level and is on the recovery trail following a long period of rehabilitation.

The Red Devils will be taking nothing for granted despite the 2-0 lead from last Thursday's encounter.

"The experience we had against Basel, where we were 2-0 up at half-time [and drew 3-3], that's in our memories," added Ferguson. "I don't think we'll be casual or careless about what we're trying to achieve tomorrow but it's a good lead. You can't dispute that."

Stoke dumped out in Valencia

Almost seven months after it began, Stoke's Europa League adventure came to an end in Valencia as Jonas' first-half goal earned the hosts a 1-0 victory at the Mestalla and a 2-0 win on aggregate.

The Potters launched their first European campaign since the 1970s with an away win over Hajduk Split back on August 4 and came through a group containing Besiktas and Dynamo Kiev, winning seven of their 12 games.

It was always an uphill struggle after they lost the home leg last week and, although Kenwyne Jones will look back on two glorious first-half chances, it is Valencia who deservedly go on to a last-16 meeting with PSV Eindhoven, who beat Trabzonspor 6-2 on aggregate.

A brace form Tim Matavz helped Eredivisie leaders PSV to a 4-1 second-leg win at the Philips Stadion. The result was a formality by half-time, with the hosts 3-1 up and Turkish side Trabzonspor reduced to ten men following the sending-off of goalkeeper Tolga Zengin.

The visitors started with hope after a narrow 2-1 loss in Turkey but a 15th-minute Dries Mertens penalty extended PSV's advantage and Matavz and Kevin Strootman extended PSV's lead before Burak Yilmaz pulled one back.

Zengin was sent off one minute before the break for handling the ball outside his area and Matavz rounded off a fine display by the Dutch team when he scored his side's fourth and final goal seven minutes after the break.

Udinese shrugged off the disappointment of a goalless first leg in Italy to hammer PAOK Salonika 3-0 in Greece. Danilo opened the scoring after six minutes and Antonio Floro Flores and Maurizio Domizzi sealed an emphatic victory.

Former Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf scored the only goal as Hannover won 1-0 in Belgium to complete a 3-1 aggregate triumph over Club Brugge.

Nacer Chadli's 29th-minute effort earned FC Twente a 1-0 win over Steaua Bucharest for a 2-0 aggregate victory, while a goalless draw was good enough for Standard Liege to squeeze past Wisla Krakow 1-1 on aggregate on the away goals rule.

Athletic Bilbao beat Lokomotiv Moscow 1-0 to also advance on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate score. Iker Muniain scored the crucial goal two minutes after Fernando Amorebieta's 60th-minute sending-off.

Martinez's death hits Brady, who mourns loss of coach, friend

Tom Brady was a sixth-round draft pick who became a two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion.

And, Brady believes, he couldn't have done it without personal coach and good friend Tom Martinez, who died Tuesday after reportedly suffering a heart attack during a kidney dialysis session. It was Martinez's 66th birthday.

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of my coach, mentor and friend," Brady said Wednesday in a statement released on his official Facebook page. "Coach Martinez's invaluable assistance and support will never be forgotten and will always have a lasting impact on my life. The time we spent together remain some of my fondest memories. His legacy of commitment, toughness and determination will live on forever."

Martinez was known as one of the most successful coaches in California community college history at College of San Mateo. Complications from diabetes led to serious health issues late in Martinez's life, and he had been in need of a kidney transplant, but he was rejected by UCLA Medical Center.

Ateneo takes Game 1, ends La Salle's win streak

MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles ended rival De La Salle Lady Spikers' perfect season after a four-set victory in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 74 women's volleyball finals Wednesday afternoon at The Arena in San Juan.

La Salle came into the finals with a thrice-to-beat advantage after a 14-game sweep of the elimination round, but the Lady Eagles outplayed them through four sets, 23-25, 28-26, 25-23 and 25-17.

The Ateneo Lady Eagles react after winning Game 1 against the De La Salle Lady
Archers in UAAP season 74 womens volleyball finals.
Ateneo’s victory ended their nine-game losing streak to La Salle. It also ended the Lady Spikers’ 25-game winning streak dating back to January 8, 2011 and their 14-game winning streak in Season 74.

"Dahil nanalo kami this game, mabi-build up 'yung confidence namin," said Ateneo’s rookie star Alyssa Valdez after the game.

La Salle showed their championship poise in the first set as they raced to an early lead, while the Lady Eagles seemed nervous while making their first ever Finals appearance.

The Lady Spikers led 23-17 before a late rally by Ateneo, behind team captain Fille Cainglet and veteran Ailysse Nacachi. Attacking errors from La Salle allowed the Lady Eagles to come as close as 23-24, but Michelle Gumabao won the set for the Lady Spikers with a cross-court attack.

Sink or swim for Painters

Grounded by two straight losses, Rain Or Shine has its back against the wall in facing Barako Bull tonight and Barangay Ginebra tomorrow in a pair of PBA Commissioner Cup games in Dubai. If the Elasto Painters return home winless, they’ll likely be the first casualty in the struggle to survive the single round-robin eliminations.

The conference format is a killer. Each of the PBA’s 10 teams plays nine games in the eliminations. The top two finishers advance to the semifinals outright while the last four placers are booted out of contention. The remaining squads figure in separate best-of-three quarterfinal series where No. 3 plays No. 6 and No. 4 meets No. 5. In the best-of-five semifinals, the No. 1 seed takes on the winner of the No. 4-No. 5 duel and the No. 2 seed the winner of the No. 3-No. 6 tie. The semifinal winners move on to dispute the championship in the best-of-seven finals.

Because the eliminations won’t offer second servings, the teams are pressured to win as many games as possible and as quickly as possible. If there are ties for the second and sixth positions, they will be settled via a playoff with all other deadlocks in rankings determined by the quotient system.

Rain Or Shine initially brought in 6-11, 26-pound center Jake Voskuhl as its import but sent him packing before the conference started. Voskuhl, 34, wasn’t impressive in his practice games. The Painters coaching staff decided to go for an alternative. “Voskuhl’s big but his size won’t be enough to bring us to the playoffs,” confided a team official.

Voskuhl has seen better days on the court. In 1999, he teamed with Rip Hamilton in powering the University of Connecticut to the NCAA championship. Voskuhl was the Chicago Bull’s second round pick in the 2000 NBA draft and went on to play for five teams in nine seasons, averaging 4.0 points and 3.4 rebounds in 450 career games. When he showed up for Rain Or Shine, Voskuhl was just a shadow of his old self.

The best available replacement was Willard Vincent (Duke) Crews, a 24-year-old upstart who was dismissed from the University of Tennessee varsity after two years and wound up with Bowie State in the NCAA Division II. It was reported that Crews got his walking papers for academic deficiencies and failing a fourth drug test. In the PBA, Crews’ problem is he’s undersized. He’s listed at 6-8 but probably closer to 6-6. Against seven-footers like Alaska’s Adam Parada and Ginebra’s Chris Alexander, Crews is dwarfed by the opposition. Crews’ saving grace is he’s young and strong. But obviously, the Painters need a lot more from Crews to get ahead.

Pacquiao, Bradley start US promo tour

BEVERLY HILLS, California – Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley Jr. both realize almost every boxing fan wishes Floyd Mayweather Jr. had been standing next to Pacquiao at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Tuesday.

But when Pacquiao and Mayweather failed to make a deal for the fight everybody wants to see, Pacquiao moved down the list of contenders to make a fight he hopes his fans will enjoy.

Pacquiao and Bradley are getting an early start on the promotional circuit for their welterweight bout June 9 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. Even while the Filipino congressman and his unbeaten opponent posed for photos and praised each other in the peach-colored ballroom at the historic Hollywood hideaway, Pacquiao and his camp realized Mayweather’s absence looms over the proceedings.

“I’m willing to fight Mayweather,” Pacquiao said. “But I have to fight the guys who are hungry to fight me. Timothy Bradley is strong, and he can punch. He’s a good boxer, so it’s a challenge to fight a guy like that.”

Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KOs) realizes he’ll have to do plenty of promoting to get fans interested in a fight against Bradley, a 140-pound champion from Palm Springs, Calif., who has never been in a fraction of the spotlight that follows Pacquiao across the globe. Pacquiao will make sure every fan knows all about Bradley (28-0, 12 KOs), praising him as a game opponent who enjoys a good action fight as much as he does – another indirect swipe at the defense-oriented Mayweather.

Deadline Diner: Will the Capitals become sellers?

We are now less than a week away from the NHL's trade deadline, and hockey’s swapping season could get crazy in the coming days. Here at NHL.com, we will bring you a daily roundup of reported rumors about who might be available and which teams might be looking to make a move for your lunchtime consumption in Deadline Diner.

WASHINGTON: The Washington Capitals looked like a team ready to book mid-April tee times in a 5-0 loss Monday night to the injury-depleted Carolina Hurricanes. Yet they are still only two points shy of the Florida Panthers and Winnipeg Jets for first-place and the Toronto Maple Leafs for eighth place in the East.

At the beginning of the season, the Capitals were expected to challenge for the top spot in the East. Now, they're fighting just to make the playoffs. GM George McPhee could go in several different directions in the next few days.

"Believe it or not, there’s still a compelling case to be made for being a buyer come Monday," writes Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post.

"But an equally strong argument can be made for the Capitals shedding salary at the deadline, too, and getting a jump start on a team that obviously needs retooling."

The third option would be to stand pat, and hope Nicklas Backstrom can return from a concussion in time to help save the season. If McPhee does want to add but doesn't want to place Backstrom on long-term injury reserve he has less than $1 million in acquisition space, so any deal will likely have to include a roster player going the other way.

If McPhee decides to punt this season and start the reloading process for 2012-13, El-Bashir lists a few key players who could be on the move. They included pending UFAs Alexander Semin, Dennis Wideman and Mike Knuble, as well as restricted free agent Mike Green.

"There was a certain chemistry that defined previous incarnations of this club. This season’s team is missing that cohesion," writes El-Bashir. "If rebooting is the route McPhee chooses, other team’s draft picks, prospects and young players are available. Why wait until the offseason?

"It just might take some gutsy decisions."

Report: Ruutu extended four years by Hurricanes

Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford removed Tuomo Ruutu from any further trade talk on Wednesday when he reportedly re-signed the right wing to a four-year, $19 million extension.

The agreement wasn't too surprising considering Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer, who first reported the signing, noted on Tuesday that Rutherford expected a decision on a contract extension from Ruutu's camp on Wednesday. If Ruutu didn't sign an extension, there would have likely been several teams lining up for his services.

Since the work stoppage in 2004-05, Ruutu has played 435 games and has 105 goals and 251 points. In 57 games this season, he has 17 goals and 30 points. Ruutu has played in four-plus season in Raleigh.
