Saints joining Roaf at Hall of Fame

Willie Roaf is going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August and the New Orleans Saints are joining him.

The Saints reportedly will open their preseason Aug. 5 by playing in the annual Hall of Fame Game. Their opponent hasn’t been determined yet, but the Saints volunteered for the Hall of Fame Game because it coincides with Roaf’s induction.

This means the Saints will play five preseason games this year instead of the traditional four. In the past, teams that appear in the Hall of Fame Game have been allowed to open training camps before other teams.

Roaf will become only the second player to spend the majority of his career with the Saints to go into the Hall of Fame. Linebacker Rickey Jackson was the first.

Why Miami is best for Peyton Manning

On the field and off, Peyton Manning seems like a good fit for the Miami Dolphins.

MIAMI - Memo to Peyton Manning: If things don't work out in Indianapolis over the next several weeks -- and they probably won't -- it's time to take your talents to South Beach.

Yes, Manning should be the next superstar player to land in Miami. The Colts are expected to release Manning before his $28 million bonus is due in March. Indianapolis holds the No. 1 overall pick, which will kick off the Andrew Luck era while simultaneously ending the Manning era.

It's time for Manning, if he's healthy, to make another team a Super Bowl contender. The Dolphins can't make their pitch while Manning is still under contract. But there is nothing illegal about the AFC East blog doing some early legwork and making a pitch for the Dolphins instead.

NCAA Lets Facebook Fans Pick March Madness Field

It’s an annual rite for college basketball fans to grumble about how they would have done a better job than the NCAA’s official selection committee when picking the March Madness tournament field.

This year, a team of ten Facebook-savvy fans gets a chance to prove what they know, and demystify the selection process for others, thanks to a first-of-its-kind NCAA contest.

Announced today, the Super 10 contest winners will travel to Atlanta for Selection Sunday to make their picks using official data while using social media to document their experience.

The winners were chosen after submitting 30-second videos demonstrating their passion and basketball knowledge to the NCAA’s March Madness Facebook Page. In Atlanta, they’ll attend the ACC conference tournament, tour the Turner Sports broadcast studios where March Madness coverage will take place, and be given an in-depth primer on how teams are selected for the field.

Then they’ll adjourn to a war room with some former members of the official committee and create their own bracket to be posted to Facebook and NCAA.com an hour before the actual version is released on March 11.

“One push this year is to make the process more transparent,” Jeff Hathaway, chair of the NCAA’s selection committee, told Mashable. “We’ve done these mock selections for members of the media, college coaches and broadcast talent, but now to give these 10 fans an opportunity will be a tremendous experience for them and a great opportunity to shed some light on how it actually works.”

Eagles close to signing Trent Edwards

It’s rare for a G.M. give much away on the podium at the Scouting Combine, but Eagles G.M. Howie Roseman made an exception Thursday.

Roseman strongly indicated that the team will sign quarterback Trent Edwards shortly.

Of course, Roseman could be open about it because Edwards isn’t exactly in high demand. He did not finish last season with a team.

The other big takeaway from Roseman’s session: He was more optimistic than ever about DeSean Jackson’s future in Philly.

“We’re excited about the future of DeSean Jackson in Philadelphia,” Roseman said.

NFL COMBINE: Falcons interview Coby Fleener

INDIANAPOLIS – Former Stanford tight end Coby Fleener, who ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay considers the top tight end in the draft, had an interview with the Falcons at a downtown hotel Wednesday night.

“I talked to the Falcons tight end coach [Chris Scelfo] last night,” Fleener told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday. “He seems like a good coach and a nice guy.”

The Falcons have the 55th overall pick in the second round of the NFL draft, which is set for April 26-28. Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez signed a one-year extension late last season and is expected to retire after the 2012 season.

Special day for special dragon

2012 isn’t just the Year of the Dragon. It’s the Chinese Year of the Yang Water Dragon and from a Feng Shui standpoint, the calendar will unravel lots of possibilities for good fortune.

The Year of the Yang Water Dragon comes only once in 60 years. The last time it fell was in 1952 and the next time will be in 2072. What makes the Water Dragon special is its relation to the single driving influence of the three other elements of nature – earth, wind and fire. The importance of water is reflected in the fact that it covers 2/3 of Planet Earth and 95 percent of the human body – we can’t live without it. As for the Water Dragon, it is widely characterized by thunder, lightning, growth, creativity, ability to transform, patience, perceptive thought process and insightful decision-making.

It isn’t accidental that today marks the 60th birthday of a man known for all those characteristics of a Water Dragon. As if fate dictated it, Ricky Vargas is president and CEO of Maynilad Water Services which caters to the 17 cities and municipalities of the West Zone of Greater Metro Manila. Vargas is also ABAP, SBP vice chairman and Talk ‘N’ Text governor in the PBA. For his accomplishments in sports, he is being cited as Executive of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association at the Annual Awards Night in the Manila Hotel on March 3.

Patrick Gregorio, who works closely with Vargas as Maynilad senior vice president, ABAP secretary general and Talk ‘N’ Text alternate governor in the PBA, said the man is a cut above the rest. “He is the epitome of the Water Dragon,” said Gregorio. “He’s strong in transformation and human relations. He’s a hands-on executive. He employs a collegial approach to management decision-making. He listens to suggestions. He’s very thorough in evaluating situations before making a decision. He has an abundance of good public relations, charisma and IQ. He reads a lot and is well-versed on significant issues that make a difference in our lives.”

Vargas’ sports lineage goes back to his grandfather Jorge Vargas, the founding member of the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation which is now the Philippine Olympic Committee. Jorge Vargas became the PAAF president in 1936 and earned the distinction as the first Filipino member of the International Olympic Committee. Vargas’ love for sports is a consuming passion and it shows in the way he has successfully carried out the mission of excellence set by PLDT chairman, ABAP chairman, SBP president and Talk ‘N’ Text team owner Manny V. Pangilinan.

“Not too many know that when Talk ‘N’ Text went down 1-3 in the best-of-seven semifinals against Petron in the last PBA conference, Mr. Vargas took it upon himself to do his share in getting the team back on its feet,” confided Gregorio. “He postponed an executive meeting to drop by the Moro Lorenzo Gym where the team was practicing. He spoke with Jimmy (Alapag) one-on-one. He talked to all the players. If he didn’t have the heart for sports, he wouldn’t have gone out of his way to motivate the team. We all know what happened in the end.”

Vargas attended Ateneo high school and finished with a psychology degree at UST. He was a highly-regarded human resource executive at Citibank when Pangilinan brought him to PLDT as senior vice president.

“Mr. Vargas comes across as a very down-to-earth guy,” said Gregorio. “What grounds him is his association with close friends going back to his UST and Citibank days. He never loses touch with reality. His UST buddies include Eboy Jovida and Paul Laud, both musicians. His Cititbank colleagues include Renee Rubio (now Securities Clearing Corp. COO), Manila Water CEO Gerry Ablaza and Eton CEO Danny Ignacio. He believes in the culture of sharing, of managing people like a family. That’s how he transformed Talk ‘N’ Text into a champion team, how he transformed our Filipino amateur boxers into medalists. He lives a simple life with simple joys. It’s no wonder that he’s one of Boss MVP’s most trusted guys.”

At ABAP, Vargas laid out the way for Mark Anthony Barriga to qualify for the London Olympics, for Eumir Marcial to strike gold at the World Junior Championships, for Rey Saludar to reach the top at the Asian Games and for four fighters to hit paydirt at the recent Southeast Asian Games.

“Mr. Vargas realizes that if we expect our athletes to go the extra mile for the gold, we should at least take care of their families,” said Gregorio. “So he addressed all possible distractions and provided for incentives to motivate our athletes. Our Southeast Asian Games gold medalists, for instance, received P300,000 each and our Olympic qualifier, P150,000. Before his involvement in ABAP, Mr. Vargas had no background in boxing. But his experience as a people person and an executive was more than enough to touch the heart and soul of our athletes.”

Gregorio said Vargas’ professionalism is exceptional. “At ABAP, Mr. Vargas doesn’t take PLDT’s support for granted,” continued Gregorio. “Mr. Vargas makes a presentation to convince PLDT that there is marketing value in supporting the ABAP. He picked a professional, Ed Picson, to manage ABAP’s day-to-day operations and put his stamp of approval on a four-year program. You will notice how active the ABAP is in staging regional and national competitions, how motivated are our fighters to battle for our country and their families.” When Vargas served as PBA chairman, the pro league similarly enjoyed a renaissance. “Management systems were instituted,” said Gregorio. “Mr. Vargas made it a point to professionalize the conduct and decision-making of the Board. He left a significant imprint that today, stands as a hallmark in the PBA.”

Gregorio said one of Vargas’ earliest dreams was to become a doctor. “He has realized that dream through his son Dino who is now a doctor,” said Gregorio. “He’s happily married to Gloria de Castro of Bulacan and they’re blessed with three children, Dino, Nico and Katrina, and three grandchildren.”

As Maynilad CEO, Vargas is spearheading the launch of the Philippine Popular Music Festival at the PICC Plenary Hall on July 14 with Ryan Cayabyab as executive director. Vargas, the organizing committee chairman, said “It’s high time we celebrate the artistry of the Filipino songwriter … what better way to do that than by giving them an avenue to showcase home grown talent and shine on a stage of their own.” The precursor Metro Pop Song Festival was held from 1977 to 1985 and from 1996 to 2003 but not until now has a similar concept been revived.

“The launch of the Philippine Popular Music Festival will be on Boss MVP’s birthday,” said Gregorio with a smile. “So you see, Mr. Vargas thinks of everything.”

Salud mulls more games, possibly playoff, in Dubai

DUBAI – PBA commissioner Chito Salud said it’s not a remote possibility the league will bring even bigger games to Dubai in the future, possibly a quarterfinals series or a finals game following the receptiveness of Filipino workers and expats here.

Salud was delighted by the warm welcome that he gamely revealed his future plan for the Dubai OFWs during the press conference at Asiana Hotel a few hours after their arrival from Manila Wednesday.

“Please note that we’re already holding official PBA games here, not exhibition matches. To show more love and affection to our kababayans here, at the right time, we may bring playoff matches,” said Salud.

Dubai-based Filipino journalists said OFWs here are even more supportive of the PBA now, following its bad experience with the promoter of its Dubai visit last year.

Salud stressed, though, that the PBA is moving forward even as promoter Ramon Pizarras is now in the central jail here, serving a sentence for a separate case.

“We even tried to arrange a jail visit. But apparently, they have a short visiting time here. We can’t be accommodated,” said Salud. “We want to see him. He’s still a Filipino after all.”

The PBA played two games before a full-house crowd at the Al-Shabab Sports Club last year yet Pizarras didn’t fulfill all his obligations, owing the pro league P1.5 million.

Nonetheless, Salud maintained the PBA will not turn its back on OFWs here.

“At the right time and talking to the right people, our long-term goal here is to hold playoff games. I think it’s possible to hold one best-of-three quarterfinals series here while another series is being played back in Manila. Or we can play one final game here,” said Salud.

The PBA is now working with the group of San Fernando, Pampanga native Edwin Daeng for the two-game series featuring Rain or Shine, Barangay Ginebra and Barako Bull.

The Elasto Painters and the Energy were to square off at 8 p.m. Thursday (12 midnight in Manila) to kick off the series.

Next up is the Rain or Shine-Barangay Ginebra tiff at 7 p.m. Friday.

For the three teams, a visit to Burj Khalifa or any Dubai desert camp can wait some other time as they’re focused on their face-offs they consider virtual knockout games.

Going to Thursday’s game, both Rain or Shine and Barako Bull are down in the leader board coming off a poor start in the short mid-season tourney.

“It’s already desperation period for us,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao. “The elims is so short and four teams will be eliminated. You need at least five wins to make the playoffs.”

“This Dubai trip is important for us. We’re down to six steps to the playoffs. One misstep and we’re in trouble,” said Barako Bull coach Junel Baculi.
